Spinal Decompression Therapy To Alleviate Back Pain

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), lower back pain is the most common cause of job-related impairment. At least 80% of Americans suffer from it at some point in their lives.

Most people either just learn to live with it or take the shelter of pain killers once these become unbearable. Sadly, painkillers and medicines offer temporary reprieve at best. For a permanent cure, you need to opt for medical processes such as Spinal Decompression Therapy.

But what exactly is it & whom do you approach for this therapy? Well, you are at the right place for the answers. We will help you understand everything about Spinal Decompression Therapy.

What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical procedure intended to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or on one or more compressed nerve roots passing through or exiting the spinal column.

Spinal Decompression Therapy to Alleviate Back Pain

Spine decompression therapy works by softly stretching the spine to position the spine. This is done by creating negative pressure on the gel-like cushions between the bones in your spinal cord. This alteration helps relieve stress on the spinal discs.

Bulging or herniated disks may retract, relieving pressure on nerves and other structures in the spine. As a result, the circulation of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the discs is aided, allowing them to repair.

Spinal decompression therapy can be used to bring about several theoretical benefits, including:

  • Back pain
  • Bulging or herniated discs
  • Posterior facet syndrome
  • Injured Spinal nerve roots

Procedure of Spinal Decompression Therapy

Under this procedure, the patients remain clothed and lie on a motorized table with the lower half of the table moving during spinal decompression therapy for the low back (lumbar spine).

The hips are secured with a harness that is attached to the lower table near the feet.

The upper part of the table is fixed, while the lower part, which is harnessed to the patient, slides back and forth to provide traction and relaxation.

Who Isn’t a Candidate For Spinal Decompression?

This therapy is not advised to be performed on people having the following conditions:

  • Spinal implants made of metal
  • Fracture
  • Tumor
  • Aortic aneurysm in the abdomen
  • Osteoporosis
