Natural Ways To Reduce Anxiety

It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, no one in the world is immune to some level of anxiety. Still, when anxiety becomes a daily reoccurrence, it can negatively affect one’s health and quality of life. Instead of simply putting a band-aid on your symptoms, we need to focus on natural remedies to reduce anxiety and other mood-related disorders. In this blog, we will cover the causes of anxiety and provide you with natural ways to reduce it.

Anxiety: What Is It?

Essentially, anxiety is your body’s natural reaction to cortisol or stress. It’s often referred to as the “fight or flight” response. Anxiety brings a feeling of worry or fear that can have a negative effect on health if it isn’t addressed. There are actually quite a few different types of anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, and panic disorder.

Causes & Effects of Anxiety

Anxiety can be caused by a plethora of different things including genetic or environmental causes. Those with parents or grandparents who experience anxiety disorders will be more prone to generalized anxiety in their lives. Some other life events that can cause anxiety include:

  • Stress from school or work
  • Stress in personal relationships such as marriage
  • Stress from a serious medical condition
  • Stress from financial issues
  • Stress from emotional trauma like the death of a loved one
  • Medication side effects
  • Use of an illicit drug

All of these factors can feed anxiety and affect one’s mental health. Although anxiety is characterized by worry and fear, it can also cause physical symptoms like tightening of the chest, muscle tension, high blood pressure, insomnia, appetite problems, or even panic attacks. Preventing anxiety is key to a healthy body and mind.

3 Natural Remedies For Anxiety

There are a variety of remedies that can be pursued to address both the causes and effects of anxiety. Here are three natural remedies to consider:

A Clean Diet

The dietary choices you make have more impact on your mental health than you know. Consuming too many or too little calories can increase anxiety symptoms and other emotional disorders. Additionally, eating a poor diet high in sugar and other processed foods leads to moodiness, fatigue, and abnormal blood sugar levels which all feed into anxiety.

To combat anxiety, it’s recommended to eat a diet with lots of anti-inflammatory foods because they are important for neurotransmitter synthesizing which helps balance mood and stress responses. Make sure to also add food rich in vitamin B and magnesium to your diet. A healthy diet consists of:

  • Wild-caught fish (like salmon, mackerel, and tuna)
  • Leafy greens (like spinach, kale, and collard greens)
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Healthy fats (like avocado, coconut oil, and olive oil)
  • Beans and legumes
  • Nuts and seeds

Exercise & Rest

It’s no shock that regular physical activity leads to a happier and healthier life. People with anxiety benefit from exercising because it helps improve sleep quality, reduce inflammation, boost confidence, and improve energy levels. This also includes practicing yoga which is one of the most effective natural remedies for stress/anxiety.

In addition to regular exercise, getting quality rest is just as important. A lack of sleep can amplify anticipatory anxiety by affecting regions of the brain associated with emotional processing. Adults getting fewer than 6 hours of sleep are prone to excessive worrying, poor concentration, and severe mood changes. Never underestimate the power of getting 7-8 hours of sleep!

Meditation

For those who go through life experiencing anxiety, meditation can reduce your worrying thoughts and bring about a feeling of balance and relaxation to your mind. The concepts of meditation go hand in hand with mindfulness, becoming aware of the present moment. Lots of generalized anxiety stems from thinking about the future and not being in the present moment. Meditation equips you with the tools to reduce stress and anxious thoughts.

Meditation is also great when paired with natural aging treatments such as Acupuncture Treatments, NAD+ IV Therapy, and Peptide Therapy. Being mindful of helpful therapies and how you take care of yourself will help spark a balance between mind and body, and both are equally important for maintaining a healthy well-being.
