Activate Your Full Human Potential With Wim Hof Breathing Techniques

Recent health trends have people searching for natural ways to improve both their mental and physical well-being. Many have turned to practices such as breathwork. One method that has been gaining interest is the Wim Hof method. Before learning how to perform this breathing technique, it’s important to know who Wim Hof is and why his breathwork could be beneficial. In this blog, we will provide you with all the necessary information about Wim Hof’s breathing techniques.

What is the Wim Hof Method?

The Wim Hof method is a lifestyle practice created by Dutch extreme athlete Wim Hof, also known as the Iceman. His method consists of three pillars: breathing techniques, cold therapy, and commitment. We want to highlight the breathing technique portion of Wim Hof’s method for its potential health benefits.

Science Behind this Breathing Method

The Wim Hof method can be valuable for both the brain and the body. Breathing techniques learned through this method are a form of meditation and can help people who suffer from stress or anxiety. It can also help improve sleep, improve focus, and relieve headaches.

In addition to supporting one’s mental health, the Wim Hof method can have physical benefits as well. A 2019 case study examined the effects of an eight-week Wim Hof method course for adults with axial spondyloarthritis, a type of arthritis that causes swelling and pain in the spine. Those adults in the group who performed breathing techniques and cold therapy experienced a reduction in certain inflammatory markers compared with the control group.

Other similar studies have also shown that the Wim Hof method can produce anti-inflammatory effects which is beneficial to those who live with pains, aches, or muscle stiffness.

How to Perform the Wim Hof Method

If you’re wondering how this method is performed, you’ll be happy to hear that it can be easily done at any time by following a few simple steps. The following are step-by-step instructions on how to do the Wim Hof breathing method:

  1. Get in a safe, comfortable position away from any distractions (smartphones, TVs, etc.)
  2. Breathe normally and become aware of your breathing pattern.
  3. Slowly inhale until you fill your lungs to expand fully.
  4. Let the air flow out naturally. It’s key not to force your exhale.
  5. Continue this process of breathing slowly up to 20 or 30 times.
  6. After your final exhale, hold your breath for as long as possible.
  7. Once you begin to feel discomfort, take a deep breath in and hold your breath for another 10 to 15 seconds.
  8. Repeat all of the above steps as many times as wanted

There it is! Performing breathing techniques from the Wim Hof method is as simple as that. Please remember, if you experience any unpleasant feelings or lightheadedness stop the exercise immediately and try again at a different time.  It is very important you do this method in a safe and comfortable environment.
